NIRAS acquires the Swedish environmental engineering consultancy AquaBiota
With the acquisition of AquaBiota, NIRAS strengthens its position as the leading environmental consultancy in Scandinavia and as a key company in the expansion of global offshore wind.

“Through the alignment with AquaBiota, NIRAS strengthens its position in Sweden with a further 25 environmental consultants, who mainly specialise within the fields of marine biology and limnology. AquaBiota has a strong profile when it comes to private investors, which supplements our existing portfolio of large framework agreements with public sector clients. The fact that many of AquaBiota’s clients are important actors in the development of sustainable energy is fully in line with NIRAS’ defined focus areas and future strategy” says Tomas Hjorth, NIRAS Business Area Manager for Environment in Sweden.
Around 300 environmental consultants
With AquaBiota, NIRAS’ organisation now counts approximately 75 environmental consultants in Sweden. They are a part of a Scandinavian network in the NIRAS group of around 300 environmental consultants. NIRAS’ expertise covers a broad range of key areas, for example managing contaminated areas, EIA and permitting, Environmental Due Diligence, environmental inventory and monitoring, environment management and compliance, modelling and GIS.

Contributes to the green transition in a sustainable way
With AquaBiota, NIRAS strengthens its leading position within EIA and permitting in regards to expanding offshore wind parks. NIRAS has worked with developing offshore wind parks for more than 20 years, first in Denmark and later in the UK and globally. All in all, NIRAS has been involved in projects totalling over 50 GW of combined capacity.
