Alexander Ulslev always knew that he wanted to explore a more independent approach to his work life and had originally planned to become a freelancer. An interesting offer made him try out life as a consultant, and he hasn’t looked back since.

When Alexander Ulslev started out after having obtained an MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from DTU back in 2017, and with two years of experience within pharma IT and automatization from Novo Nordisk, his original plan was to go the freelance route. But when he was offered a contract as a consultant in Alpha Nordic, which has since become part of the NIRAS group, he decided to take it to see what life as a consultant was like.

Alexander is now a senior consultant in the IT Automation team and working as a consultant has given him the freedom, flexibility and professional challenges that he originally planned to become a freelancer to get.

From A to Z within IT Automation

Alexander was looking for a varied worklife and a learning curve that allowed him to work across disciplines, learning as much about his field as possible. He works with a wide array of areas covering everything from conceptual designs, basic designs of project work and validation of computer systems, to GMP requirements, document packages, and systems architecture. These all fall within the scope of IT Automation, which can span across both utility and production, and across different companies. So it’s safe to say that his workday is as varied as is almost possible.

“For me, it was the opportunity to work with many different areas and in a very cross-disciplinary way. As a consultant, you get to meet a lot of different companies and people and see how they do things, how they work in different ways. It’s both inspiring and educating, and it keeps you on your toes”.

Exponential growth with a strong support system

Alexander has been on a steep learning curve since joining NIRAS, but to him, getting the chance to fast-track your experience is one of the great things about working as a consultant.

“The great thing about NIRAS is that you get a lot of interesting challenges across big projects in particular, and you learn a lot about what happens in other workstreams. And as a result, the way you cooperate with others across disciplines really improves.”

Alexander works with multiple costumers which is different from many other consultants who are allocated full time on one costumer. He is primarily located at the NIRAS headquarters in Allerød and travels between costumers. He values having the support of a strong business unit, and being able to get guidance and share knowledge within both his own department as well as other parts of the organization has been a big plus and allows for a more nuanced approach to solving problems.

“It’s important to know that your organisation has your back if you need it, and there’s no doubt that the team in Life Science Consulting provides a foundation for their consultants to work from where they feel supported.”
