Food & Beverage Construction Delivery Partner
Working with leading food and drink manufacturers, NIRAS Construction delivers refurbishment, remodelling and new build projects in complex, live manufacturing environments. Our experience of planning and managing construction alongside ongoing production helps clients deliver major investment programmes safely and efficiently.
Whether you're delivering a small site improvement or a major capital investment, NIRAS Construction provides the expertise to safely deliver projects in live food and beverage manufacturing environments.
Acting as Principal Contractor, we manage the construction and implementation of projects from site preparation through to handover, working closely with our multidisciplinary teams to coordinate process, architectural, civil and structural, mechanical, electrical and project management expertise.
Our team has extensive experience delivering refurbishment, expansion, remodelling and new build projects for some of the world's leading food and beverage manufacturers. We understand the challenges of working within operational facilities, where maintaining production, minimising disruption and managing safety are just as important as delivering the project itself.
We also work closely with equipment suppliers and specialist contractors to coordinate installation and commissioning, helping clients bring new facilities and production lines into operation as efficiently as possible.
With projects ranging from £50,000 to more than £50 million, we provide the same focus and attention whether we're delivering targeted site improvements or large scale manufacturing investments.
Civil & Structural Engineering
Civil and structural engineering plays a key role in the successful delivery of industrial projects. Whether installing new process equipment, expanding an operational facility or developing a new manufacturing site, our engineers help clients understand site constraints, coordinate complex engineering requirements and develop solutions that can be delivered safely and efficiently.
Our capabilities
Our civil and structural engineers can support projects at any stage, from early feasibility through to detailed design, procurement and construction support. Services include:
Assessments and feasibility
Helping clients understand the opportunities and constraints before detailed design begins.
· Site feasibility studies
· Structural assessments
· Structural inspections and condition surveys
· Due diligence and technical reviews
· Expansion and options studies
· Floor and roof load capacity assessments
· Brownfield redevelopment studies
Civil and structural engineering design
Engineering design for new facilities, site expansions and operational upgrades.
· Steel framed buildings
· Reinforced concrete structures
· Equipment foundations
· Equipment support structures
· Pipe racks and process support structures
· Mezzanine floors and access platforms
· Crane supporting structures
· Building alterations and structural strengthening
· Retaining walls
· Drainage, external works and SuDS
· Utility corridors and site infrastructure
· Cut & Fill Earthworks Design
· Principal Designer CDM & BSA
Construction support
Providing technical support throughout procurement and construction.
· Tender documentation
· Design reviews
· Contractor support
· Site inspections
· Construction phase engineering support
"The engineering is important, but understanding how the site works is just as important. Spending time with the people who operate and maintain the facility nearly always leads to a better solution."
Carl Harrison, Head of Civil, Structural Engineering & Architecture
Every project starts with understanding how the facility operates, not just how the building is constructed.
Our engineers collaborate with production, operations and maintenance teams to develop solutions that minimise operational disruption, improve constructability and allow for future expansion.
Experience across industry and beyond
Much of our work is carried out on operational sites, where maintaining production, planning construction activities and working safely around existing operations are all key considerations.
Working as part of multidisciplinary engineering teams, we collaborate closely with process, mechanical, electrical, automation and utilities specialists to develop coordinated engineering solutions that support the wider needs of each facility.
Our experience is not just limited to industrial projects. Over the last 30 years we have a long track history in education, residential and retail.
Our experience includes:
· Food production facilities
· Breweries and distilleries
· Life sciences and pharmaceutical facilities
· Consumer goods manufacturing
· Process facilities
· Manufacturing plants
· Warehouses and distribution centres
· Utilities and energy infrastructure
· Brownfield and Greenfield developments
· Residential
· Inland Marinas
· Leisure
· Retail
Typical engineering challenges we solve
Clients often approach us with a specific engineering challenge rather than a fully defined project. Our civil and structural engineers regularly support projects involving:
· Installing heavier production equipment
· Assessing existing roof capacity
· Extending operational factories
· Supporting new process pipework
· New mezzanine floors
· Foundation settlement
· Floor capacity assessments
· Existing building strengthening
· Warehouse extensions
· Crane beam modifications
Specialist software and digital engineering
We use industry recognised engineering software and collaborate with other disciplines in a coordinated BIM environment. Specialising in complex process driven buildings the use of coordinated models allows our civil and structural engineers to work closely with process, mechanical, electrical, automation and architectural teams, helping identify potential clashes early and improving coordination throughout the design process.
Making buildings work harder
Existing buildings often have more potential than first expected. Where appropriate, we assess whether structures can be adapted or strengthened before replacement is considered, helping clients make informed investment decisions while allowing for future operational changes.
Integrated Engineering Expertise
Our civil and structural engineers specialise in industrial and process facilities rather than commercial buildings, working alongside process, mechanical, electrical, automation and utilities specialists to provide coordinated engineering support from feasibility through to detailed design.
Health, Safety, Wellbeing and the Environment are our top priorities
Our people and supply chain are the key to our success. The overall health, safety and wellbeing of everyone working on our projects is absolute paramount. We truly believe that no one should return home to their loved ones in a worse condition than when they started. In fact, we strive to send them home happy and healthier after each day.
This is also true for the land and environment in which we work. The activities we undertake should never be to the detriment of the environment we live in.
Our success to date:
- Since inception in 2016, IFP Construction has never had a RIDDOR reportable incident. This is something we are very proud of and strive to maintain.
- During 2022, we delivered in excess of 160,000 hrs. of work on live projects.
- We maintain our SafeContractor accreditation to demonstrate our commitment to high standards of H&S.
- We've developed a positive culture for the reporting of H&S observations to help us learn and continually improve.
- We work closely with the Considerate Contractors Scheme to ensure we maintain high standards across all our sites.
- We strongly believe in continual improvement and invest in training for both our employed and associate workforce.
- Our robust H&S management system enables our project teams to effectively manage high risk activities.
- Our supply chain partners are selected on their ability to demonstrate that their commitment to the HS&W of their employees matches ours.
