Transforming dormant sites into operational hubs

NIRAS was engaged to manage the transformation of two large distribution centres taken over by a multinational retailer. The project required full dilapidation, refurbishment, and installation of bespoke storage systems - all while preparing for partial operational go-live before project completion.

Our approach

With a strong focus on safety and sequencing, NIRAS deployed its accredited OHSAS18001 site management system. We coordinated over 20 contractors, delivering:

  • Comprehensive pre-site onboarding and competency checks

  • Round-the-clock site supervision by dedicated HSE managers

  • Robust sequencing to support safe installation at height

The complexity of the project demanded precision planning and unwavering oversight, particularly as the client ramped up operations before final handover.

Results

The 64-week programme delivered significant operational benefits and a safe working environment throughout:

  • 290,000+ manhours worked

  • 2,800+ health and safety inspections

  • 2,200+ site inductions

  • 1,200+ permits issued

  • 350+ Toolbox Talks delivered

NIRAS brought structure, safety, and certainty to a high-risk, high-volume programme - enabling a smooth transition from dormant infrastructure to live logistics operations.
