Redeveloping a former church site for a modern convenience store

Coop Main

NIRAS provided consultancy services to Central Coop for the redevelopment of a former Methodist Church site on Liverpool Road North in Maghull, Liverpool. Working closely with the client as the future operator of the store, the project focused on transforming the previously developed site into a modern convenience retail destination that would serve the local community.

To enable the new development, the existing church buildings were demolished and the site prepared for the construction of a new 4,500 sq ft convenience store developer shell and supporting infrastructure. The scheme also included a dedicated customer car park and external works designed to ensure safe and efficient access for both customers and deliveries.

A key part of the design was integrating sustainable infrastructure within the development. High speed electric vehicle charging points and ground mounted solar panels were incorporated into the scheme, supporting Central Coop’s ambition to introduce modern energy solutions while future proofing the site.

Redeveloping a former church site required careful planning around demolition, site layout and infrastructure while ensuring the new retail space could operate efficiently once complete. By working closely with Central Coop throughout the project, NIRAS helped deliver a practical and well planned development that balances operational requirements, sustainability considerations and the needs of the local community.
