Project
Creating a modern crematorium that balances community need, sustainability and design quality
Project
NIRAS was part of the multidisciplinary team delivering the new Bierley Crematorium for Bradford Metropolitan District Council (BMDC). The project aimed to provide a modern, welcoming and respectful facility that could better serve the needs of the local community while offering flexible spaces designed to accommodate a range of ceremonies and gatherings.
The development involved the construction of a new crematorium building featuring two service halls. A smaller hall provides a more intimate setting for smaller ceremonies, while a larger hall accommodates services with up to 250 to 300 attendees. The facility also includes a waiting area, energy efficient cremators, office space, staff welfare facilities and car parking.
Sustainability was an important consideration throughout the project. The scheme incorporates energy efficient cremators and extensive memorial grounds designed to deliver a 10 percent biodiversity net gain, helping to enhance the surrounding landscape while supporting environmental goals.
Delivering a facility of this nature required careful coordination between multiple specialist partners while ensuring the building provides a respectful and comfortable environment for visitors. NIRAS worked as part of a wider project team including RPP, Furness Partnership, PGS and Environoise to successfully deliver the scheme.
The quality of the design and delivery has been recognised by the client, who plans to enter the completed crematorium for a number of industry awards. The project stands as an example of how thoughtful design, collaboration and sustainability can come together to create a meaningful civic space for the community.
