The Långbrodal School nominated by the Stockholm Building of the Year award

The new school of Långbrodal has a modern design with sustainable materials chosen to withstand the test of time, while embracing the existing building’s style of national romanticism from 1915.

The Stockholm Building of the Year award is given annually after an open and public vote process between ten finalists. The nominated buildings were all completed during 2017.

NIRAS Architects have designed a new addition building to the 100+ year old elementary and middle school in Älvsjö, Stockholm. The result is a fusion between old and new, where the modern and sustainable titanium zinc plate facade interacts with the old school built in the 1920s national romantic style. The new structure is an interpretation of today's goals, conditions and requirements on architecture, pedagogy, technical solutions and accessibility.

Comments from the jury on the school of Långbrodal:

“An almost picturesque building with a volume that is both original, playful and functional. It is positive with a school building that creates a strong identity around an educational space, which is not that common today.”

NIRAS Architects and the school of Långbrodal were also nominated to PLÅT 2018, the Swedish architectural prize, for its unique expression. The titanium zinc facade dresses the building envelope from ridge to base.
