The prestigious annual award is selected by the people of Stockholm, who vote for their favorite building among ten finalists. All of the finalist buildings are situated in Stockholm and were completed in 2017.

“We are so proud to receive the Stockholm Building of the Year 2018 award for the school of Långbrodal! What an honor! As in most architectural projects, it has been a team effort to design the building. Everyone has worked hard together and contributed to the result,” says one of the architects in the team.

Architecture that forms the education of today

The aim of the award is to create interest and involvement for the modern Stockholm and to encourage discussions about what the built environment of the capital should be. The jury selected the ten finalists based on the buildings architecture, sustainability, innovation and significance to Stockholm. The school of Långbrodal is an example where all those characteristics have been carefully incorporated.

A building with a strong identity

Next to the new school of Långbrodal is an old Swedish grace school building from 1915. The old school is a magnificent representative of the architectural and educational ideals of its time. A hundred years later, the new school shapes the education of today. The classicistic shape of the gables is reused, durable titanium zinc replaces plastered facades and smart boards and laptops are added to the student’s pens and papers.

The school is recessed from the street to align with the surrounding buildings. The placement was carefully chosen to both minimize earthwork and optimize orientation. Spaces for concentration-demanding activities are positioned to the north side of the building for its cool light and calm surroundings, while spaces for high energy activities, play and exercise are positioned to the south facing the sunlit schoolyard.

”An almost picturesque building with a volume that is both original, playful and functional. It is positive with a school building that creates a strong identity around an educational space, which is not that common today,” the jury commended the Långbrodal School at the Stockholm Building of the Year 2018 website.
