Compared to traditional activity-based development aid, fund management is an efficient and effective vehicle to finance the SDG agenda. It facilitates the support of private sector, civil society and institutions and their project ideas (e.g., investment proposals), and involves the strategic use of development funding to leverage additional capital, especially from the private sector, for project development. For over a decade, NIRAS has been setting up and managing different types of funding facilities from discretionary Grant Funds to Challenge Funds as well as fund companies (Ltd) that engage in lending to financial institutions e.g., credit lines or guarantees. NIRAS launched its Fund Management Unit in 2017 to consolidate and catalyse its experience in this area in response to the growing use of different fund set ups as an efficient and effective way to distribute development funding and further financing. In this process, NIRAS engages institutional and private investors to provide advice and support for securing funding and financing for SDG investments, increasingly facilitated through the use of blended financing.
At NIRAS, we consistently gather tried and tested fund management experience accumulated over the years and create well-defined services – such as procedures for grant cycle administration, fund administration, capacity building for project developers, and business integrity management – as well as state-of-the-art tools, like our SmartME online fund management system, all of which can be customized for a variety of clients and markets.
