Under the overarching theme of "Women and Girls at the Forefront of Sustainable Development", NIRAS joined discussions at EDD on how to better strengthen work in all sectors towards gender equality and human rights.
At the 12th edition of European Development Days (EDD), the European Commission placed the spotlight on its commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment within the SDG agenda. Over 140 countries and 8000 participants discussed, presented and mingled over two days. NIRAS was there to join the debate.
Under the main thread of “Women and Girls at the Forefront of Sustainable Development: protect, empower, invest”, the EDD 2018 agenda was framed by three major themes emerging as key priorities in today’s current context: Ensuring the Physical and Psychological Integrity of Girls and Women, Promoting Economic and Social Rights and Empowerment of Girls and Women, and Strengthening Girls’ and Women’s Voice and Participation.
Thanks to the newly won EU Framework Contracts, an increasing number of implementation projects, and our recently launched work supporting the implementation of a rights-based approach (RBA) encompassing all rights in EU development cooperation, NIRAS is reinforcing its strong position in the EU market. It was useful for us to be present at EDD and participate in the latest discussions on how to better strengthen work in all sectors towards gender equality and human rights. Topics covered interesting sessions on gender equality in the areas of; Economy, Climate, WASH, Water, Peace & Security, Rural Development, Agriculture, and Migration to mention a few.
Gender equality and women empowerment are at the core of European values and NIRAS’ ones too!
"NIRAS is now managing two of five DEVCO Help Desks: Gender Mainstreaming and Rights-Based Approach (RBA)," Catharina Schmitz TD Gender and human rights. "This means we will be instrumental in changing EU aid towards a more inclusive cooperation."
The EU is on a mission to strengthen alignment with gender equality and RBA in the entire EU project cycle management, its capacity building, monitoring and resource package. More interestingly, the EU intends to develop a common approach for gender equality and RBA, which NIRAS will be part of developing. The NIRAS Gender Network with closely follow these developments and develop guiding material and other resources that will be posted on the CVPT Knowledge Tank.
