After undergoing a rigorous series of trainings, this year’s BOOST UP startups are preparing for their final step in the process, a trip to Finland on 13-24 November 2019 to attend Slush, Europe’s premier startup festival.
Supported by phase two of the Southern Africa Innovation Support Programme (SAIS 2), BOOST UP is a three-part series of events for startups implemented by the SAIS focal points and connected hubs. These events are aimed at early-stage startups that are trying to solve societal problems using technology and are looking for skills that could help them articulate business ideas.
This year, BOOST UP started off with its first event, Set Up, which provided coaching to startups with the aim of helping the entrepreneurs gain practical tools to package their business ideas into a pitch to attract their target market. After that came Stand Up, where changemaker startups with a scalable business idea and a desire to grow competed at national pitching competitions in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia. Read about the Stand Up pitch competition that took place in Windhoek, Namibia on 15 August.
Of these competitors, a total of 14 impact startups were finally selected to participate in Scale Up, an online incubation programme aimed at making the participants more investible. This incubator includes the BOOST UP bootcamp, an on-site training programme in Helsinki that will culminate in Slush - one of the largest startup events in the world.
During the bootcamp, the startups will pitch at the BOOST UP Final Pitch Competition, which will take place at the Slush side event "Investing and Partnering with African Innovators" on 19 November 2019. (Click here for more information or to register to attend.)
