NIRAS has registered a new company in Bogotá, Colombia. NIRAS America Latina will support NIRAS’ growth in the Latin-American market and have dedicated staff to the Framework Contracts Unit.
After receiving the award notice of the EU Framework Contracts SIEA 2018, where NIRAS is lead in two lots and partner in three (out of six technical lots in total), we started working towards the geographical expansion that was planned to take place in connection with the implementation of the Framework Contracts.
NIRAS has a long lasting experience in working in Latin-America, where we have implemented more than 70 assignments covering agriculture, environment, energy, forestry, to name a few. From these assignments, 26 were implemented through Framework Contracts.
With the new phase of the Framework Contracts starting in May 2018, NIRAS decided to expand our activities and our presence in order to be able to reply to the demanding work in the Framework Contracts. Our new office in Bogotá is an important step in that direction, where our new dedicated framework staff cover a number of relevant technical sectors and different working languages.
Bogotá has been, for several years now, one of the most important regional hubs in Latin America and the Caribbean, ranking 5th amongst the first 10 business friendly cities of the whole region. It has been consolidated as a regional base for a wide range of international businesses, including European companies. With close to 10 million habitants and a steadily growing economy, it has both a strategic location in between Central America, the Caribbean and South America as well as high levels of education enrollment and well prepared human resources. It also offers the second largest airport of the whole region after Sao Paulo and the best connected regionally.
Our colleague Santiago Espinal, who many know from his work in the Swedish Office and who is from Colombia, is returning home to be the Director of NIRAS America Latina. Santiago is an agriculture value chain and Green finance expert with over 16 years of relevant experience. Santiago was trained in Economics and Political Science, got a master’s degree in International development from the University of Paris V and started his career in the Food and Agriculture Organization (UN) in South America as project officer in the Andean region. Since 2005 he has participated, first as expert and then as team leader and manager in a wide range of MSME finance, renewable energy access and agriculture development projects and programmes in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, with public donors/funders such as EU, UNDP, IADB, AECID, AFD, FMO and SIDA and also private ones such as Carrefour, Master Card, BBVA Foundation, Bancolombia. He has also led the regional operations in Latin America for two European companies before joining NIRAS in early 2017. One a consulting company in the field of green finance (Planet Finance) and the other an impact investment international fund for agriculture and energy (Oikocredit, Netherlands). Santiago has developed a relevant network in the region from his different assignments and missions in Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, Chile, and Mexico.
