NIRAS at COP22: “We have a lot to give”

Published: 29-11-2016

With the Paris Agreement in effect, the participants at the COP22 in Marrakesh were looking for solutions – and the NIRAS delegation had a busy schedule. As heads of states, royalty and high-level negotiators were mingling among the thousands of delegates at the COP22 climate conference in Marrakesh, a sense of optimism was in the air.

This time, focus was on how to reach the goals, and how the governing bodies can measure, report and verify the agreed CO2 reductions and how to best fund it. In other words, the COP22 was about turning the “Spirit of Paris” into action, carried by a historic recognition of climate change as our generation’s primary challenge and the subsequent commitment of 197 signatory countries and 114 ratifications, including China and the U.S.

A cross-organizational group from NIRAS was part of a booth in the Nordic Business Pavillon, where the COP participants were busy hearing about how NIRAS can contribute to reaching the ambitious goals.

“I felt a truly inspiring vibe and energy. The world was represented in Marrakech –with the common goal of solving the climate problem. NIRAS is definitely a climate player with a global reach and has a lot to offer. By doing what we do best, we can improve the health of the planet while maintaining a healthy business. This dual goal is why we’re part of this journey. ,” says Country Director Antti Inkinen from NIRAS Finland.

For instance, International Climate Director for Climate Change and Energy, Morten Pedersen from the Danish NIRAS office, was the moderator of a side event dealing with measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) in African countries.

“It was quite interesting having the attention of wide range of ministers. Especially because NIRAS is one of the few companies in the world, which actually has experience with MRV as a follow-up of the Paris Agreement, because we’re managing an EU project in this field,” says Morten Pedersen.

NIRAS works in virtually all sectors with climate-related projects on four continents, and expects to grow the climate-related business substantially over the coming years.

“We see an increased funding towards climate projects compatible with our core skills, and the Conference Of Parties is the primary event for networking and a great opportunity for showcasing our projects,” says Antti Inkinen.
