Scope

Water consumers expect today quality and efficiency in treatment and distribution of water. Consequently, water supply authorities must be fully competent to technically as well as institutionally deliver this service.

NIRAS has provided consultancy services on water supply throughout the world for the last 50 years to private and public water utilities and has available highly qualified expertise in:

Implementation

  • Feasibility studies on technical, social, financial and environmental aspects.    
  • Design, implementation and commissioning of water supply systems from water intake/well through waterworks and reservoirs to pipe systems and pumping stations.
  • Development of investment plans future expansion requirements.
  • Design and appraisal of development water supply and sanitation projects.

Operation and maintenance 

  • Advanced control and automation of water supply systems.
  • Computer modelling of the water pipelines to provide valuable information on the operational conditions
  • Development of management information systems to facilitate a systemisation of improving operation and maintenance.

Assuring water quality and quantity

  • Assessment of catchment area (extent, land use, risk assessment) 
  • Chemical assessment of the water quality
  • Implementation of groundwater models, including simulation of potential hydrological and chemical scenarios
  • Establishment of remediation projects towards pollution of production fields.
  • Capacity assessment of existing wells and drillings and preliminary design of new alternative wells

One of our strengths is to view and treat water supply in an integrated manner. When working on e.g. National strategies, regional master plans, development water supply projects in Africa or even detailed planning for smaller water utilities, we have the potential to include in-house specialists from other fields like institutional and organisational development, socio-economy, health issues, infrastructure, financial and economic assessments and lastly the environmental aspect.

In short, we provide technical assistance worldwide on design, implementation, operation and maintenance of water supply and sanitation. We find it central to deliver a final end outcome that reflect public attitudes, meet regulatory criteria, and answer community concerns for durable and sustainable water supply infrastructure.
