NIRAS gets on top of hazardous waste in Moldova

NIRAS is to supervise the collection and removal of obsolete pesticides and electronic components containing harmful PCB-substances in Moldova.

Mogens Straarup from NIRAS Chemcontrol is enthusiastic about this challenging project: ”We have to supervise the removal, packing and transportation of around 1,200 tonnes of obsolete pesticides to France, where they will be destroyed. The international rules for packaging and transportation are particularly meticulous because the pesticides are highly toxic to the environment and to human beings.”

NIRAS also has to ensure that substances containing Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) are removed, transported and disposed of properly. PCB is particularly interesting in terms of the environment because it accumulates in animals and humans. NIRAS therefore also has to prepare a proposal for how it is possible to clear up after a larger-scale contamination with PCB from accidents with transformers.

NIRAS has won the project along with Royal Haskoning from Holland in an international competition. The client is the “Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources” in Moldova and the project is financed by the World Bank. The project is being performed until the end of 2007.
