Steel award for the concert hall
DR's concert hall was the only Danish building to win the European
Steel Award 2009 and NIRAS was able to claim a share in the honour.
Every second year, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork
(ECCS) bestows the European Steel Award on buildings that the ECCS’
national member associations consider worthy of recommendation.
In March, the Danish member association, the Danish Steel Institute (DSI),
chose only one of four submitted projects, DR’s concert hall, for
recommendation for the European Steel Award 2009. NIRAS was the consulting
engineer on the project and the contractors included Promecon and Waagner
Biro.
ECCS has just announced that the concert hall will receive the prestigious
award, which will be presented in Barcelona between 16 and 18 September.
A unique example of the use of steel
According to the panel of judges, DSI recommended the concert hall for the
steel award due to the fact that
“DR Byen’s new concert hall is one of the key buildings in Ørestad.
The cubic volume of the building is framed by a pre-tensioned steel
structure and completed by a façade of glass panels. A dynamic
building of spatial complexity is visible through the subtle filter of the
façade and it is just possible to glimpse the concert hall’s “meteor”
floating in the expansive foyer.
This is a world full of contrast, a three-dimensional labyrinth, an inner
landscape.
The concert hall is an excellent example of function, construction and
aesthetics in perfect balance.
The concert hall project comprises several innovative steel structures and
illustrates the potential of steel. It would not have been possible to
construct a building of this complexity without optimising the many and
diverse features of steel.
These are the reasons behind the judges’ recommendation of the building for
the European Steel Award 2009."
