The Szczecin-Świnoujście Seaway and Port Modernization Project in Poland

On the 5th May, 2006 the contract for supervision and management of the Szczecin-Świnoujście Seaway and Port Modernization Project between Szczecin-Świnoujście Port Authority and NIRAS/NIRAS Polska was signed.

Hereby, the two-stage tender procedure of choosing the Contract Engineer was closed. Six consortiums consisting of Polish and foreign companies (from England, Holland, Spain, and Japan among others) participated.

The Szczecin-Świnoujście Seaway and Port Modernization Project comprises consulting services (supervision and management) connected to two projects: Katowice Peninsula Infrastructure Construction and Grabowski Island Infrastructure for the future container terminal construction in Szczecin.

The main elements of the latter project consist of a quay (240 m length) and a Ro-Ro ramp, a deposit for waste (dredged materials), a reinforcement of the river bottom, roads and railway lines, earth works, and a container handling yard. The implementation cost is 70.6 Mio PLN (approximately 19 Mio EUR), and the project will be carried out by the Consortium managed by two German companies over a period of 18 months.

The most important elements in Katowice Peninsula Infrastructure Construction are road and parking yard construction and territorial development, inclusive embankment.

Both projects are to be implemented in accordance with FIDIC’s Conditions of Contract Implementation. Furthermore, both projects have to prepare and develop the basic infrastructure required by the future operators of the port.

Szczecin-Świnoujście consists of two ports in which the loading reached 16 mio. tonnes in 2005. The port of Swinoujście is located by the sea, and the port of Szczecin, where the two projects will be implemented, is located 65 km up the Odra River.
