News office opened in Copenhagen

DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) has moved all its activities to new facilities: The New Radio & TV House (DR Byen), in the northern part of Ørestad in Copenhagen. 19th November DR broadcasted its first news programme from DR Byen’s brand new news office, where the TV and radio production of news and sport are fused together in attractive new surroundings.

The news office has an open-plan structure giving direct contact between the studio host and the news editing office in DR News’ common news centre. The newsreader’s studio is located in a cylinder surrounded by glass. Behind this glass wall the viewers are able to see the editing in action, which will serve as a live background for news broadcasts.

NIRAS has made sure of the best conditions

NIRAS has designed the news office with the architects Dissing+Weitling. NIRAS’ contribution includes the load-bearing constructions and all the electrical and plumbing installations. Additionally we have made sure that the news office has an ideal indoor climate with optimal use of daylight for all the work stations in the open landscape. NIRAS Safety has prioritised fire safety, just as it did for DR Byen’s concert hall, Segment 1 and The Inner Street.

State of the art

The news office is state of the art within control and monitoring with a comprehensive BMS (Building Maintenance System) and IBI (Intelligent Building Installations).

Simulated indoor climate

NIRAS has ensured that the news office has a good indoor climate by calculating the ideal lighting conditions and through extensive use of B-sim calculations (simulation of indoor climate).

Fire strategy for open areas

NIRAS Safety has prepared the fire strategy report which has made it possible to establish the many very large open areas without using an automatic fire sprinkler system. With the aid of CFD-modelling we have estimated the build-up and migration of smoke and hereby assessed the required smoke ventilation rate in the case of fire. Furthermore we have adopted the Monte Carlo method in the risk assessment of the overall fire safety performance in DR Byen and the use of DR Fire Fighters as an alternative to an automatic fire sprinkler system.
