400.000 equations

NIRAS was the design engineer for the whole building project and perhaps the most fantastic thing about the new concert hall is the fact that it exists at all. It was necessary to calculate over 400.000 equations and just as many unknowns and apply the most recent IT technology to realise the architect’s ideas and get the extremely complicated buildings structures to work. 

First birthday

On 17 January it is exactly one year since the concert hall was opened. According to Leif Lønsmann, director of music and concert hall director at DR, the Wallpaper award is “quite an extraordinary gift to be given on one’s first birthday”.
"Wallpaper is the world’s leading design magazine. The fact that we have received their design award proves that we have the world's most beautiful and spectacular concert hall. During its first year, the concert hall has been honoured again and again for its aesthetic appearance and its artistic content. To be proclaimed the world champion by the world’s most fastidious and critical professionals is the greatest honour one can be given”, he adds. 

In distinguished company

The other nominees in the category were the Hamsun Centre in Hamarøy, Norway, the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany, and the San Paolo Parish Complex in Foligno, Italy.
A total of 11 awards were given out in London in various different categories, one being the world’s best city. The winners were selected by an international jury, consisting of, among others, film director Pedro Almodóvar, American architect Steven Holl and Christian Dior’s creative director, John Galliano.
The Wallpaper Design Award is the eighth award received by the concert hall in just a year. One of the other awards received was the European Steel Award.
