Support to the Marine Protected Area Network in Vietnam (MPA)

Project aiming at creating a sustainable management of marine and coastal natural resources in a national protected area system. The project is implemented by capacity building of main stakeholders at national and provincial levels in supporting selected marine protected areas.

The Technical Assistance aims at developing appropriate legal and policy framework, co-ordination mechanism for a multi-sectoral approach to marine management issues, including in situ application in the Cu Lao Cham Archipelago in the Quang Nam Province:   

At Central level:

  • Assist with formalising/expanding the concept of marine protected area network in Vietnam.
  • Assess and advice on legislation as well as economic aspects in this regard.
  • Capacity building and strengthening of central institutions to cater for more MPAs in Vietnam.

At Provincial level:

  • Analyse and assess basis for MPA at Cu Lao Cham including economic potential (fisheries, tourism etc.), cultural dimension, gender aspects, institutional framework etc.
  • Strengthen local capacity to plan for and manage MPA at Cu Lao Cham.
  • Initiate the design of MPA at Cu Lao Cham through participatory process with local stakeholders (fishermen, other local communities, public- and private sector).
  • Assist with letting Cu Lao Cha serve as demonstration site for more MPAs in Vietnam.
  • Train and conduct workshops etc.
  • Laying out of MPA (plan, mapping, ICT etc.).
