NIRAS strengthens efforts to prevent flooding

NIRAS has acquired mapping company BlomInfo A/S, thus paving the way for a range of groundbreaking, new solutions to the problems of flooding both in Denmark and globally

NIRAS is strengthening its position in the field of climate change adaption with the acquisition of BlomInfo, a leading Danish and international supplier of advanced mapping services, 3D city models and digital height models. Until recently, BlomInfo, which has a staff of 40 in Copenhagen and Aarhus, was a subsidiary of BLOM ASA, a Norwegian listed company.

NIRAS’ acquisition of BlomInfo A/S paves the way for a number of groundbreaking, new solutions to the problems of flooding both in Denmark and globally. This means that we will be able to prevent events such as the flooding that affected Copenhagen in July 2011 much more effectively in the future.

NIRAS has extensive experience with climate change adaptation strategies and has created solutions for the holistic water management for a number of municipalities and utilities companies. One example of this was a joint strategy we prepared for three municipalities in northern Zealand to climate-proof Usserød Å, a stream running through all three districts.

“The combination of NIRAS’ expertises with climate change adaptation and prevention of flooding and BlomInfo’s nationwide digital height models, which are able to simulate water flow on the surface of the earth, unleashes the potential for much more effective plans for climate change adaptation,” says Executive Director in NIRAS Allan J. Christensen, and he continues:

"The use of exact simulations of water flow in the event of flooding in streams, in sewers and along the coastline will enable municipalities and utilities companies to improve their prioritisation of investments in climate adaption in the future.”
BlomInfo’s 3D city models, maps and digital height models cover the whole of Denmark as well as a large number of cities and areas abroad.

“The incorporation of BlomInfo into NIRAS creates completely new opportunities for applying our maps and models to more efficient and targeted measures for the prevention of flooding. The threat of flooding due to rising water levels and flash floods is one of the biggest challenges both here in Denmark and globally, and I am very much looking forward to helping ensure an improvement in our efforts to prevent flooding,” says Kristian Skak-Nielsen, Managing Director at BlomInfo A/S.
