NIRAS has won a large project in connection with the urban development of Copenhagen’s Nordhavn harbour. NIRAS will be the consulting engineer on a new cruise quay and large soil depot to be situated on the outskirts of Nordhavn.
The cruise quay will be 1100 metres in length (300 metres of which will be a combined quay) and there will be sufficient room for at least three large ships at a time. The quay is expected to be ready on 1 May 2013.
This is a very large and exciting project. It has a budget of several hundred million Danish kroner and NIRAS will draw on its broad spectrum of technical skills and expert knowledge in order to solve the task. NIRAS was awarded the project by CPH City & Port Development, a corporation with which we have cooperated successfully on several other projects.
The environment will be given highest priority during the construction of the new quay. One of the initiatives that will be taken to ensure this will be the improvement of access to onshore electricity. Ships are currently required to produce electricity themselves, which means that a ship's motors often run constantly.
NIRAS is pleased to have been given the opportunity to influence the development of Nordhavn. Today, Copenhagen is one of the most desirable cruise ports in northern Europe. An increasing number of tourists visit Copenhagen each year and many of them either begin or end their journey in the city. The area around the new cruise terminal may also become a new outing destination for Copenhageners and tourists alike, with its observation tower and opportunities for walking, running and skating.
Copenhagen is the most visited cruise destination in the Baltic Region. The most popular destination in the world is the Caribbean, closely followed by the Mediterranean. However, the Baltic Region is now more popular than Alaska and is, today, the third largest cruise destination in the world. Moreover, Copenhagen is the Baltic port at which most passengers start and end their journeys.
