CP Kelco is an international company with production facilities in many countries. One of their factories in Denmark produces thickening agents based on citrus fruits and is the largest factory of its kind in the world. CP Kelco prioritises a high level of security at their production facilities.
In 2009 NIRAS carried out a systematic risk analysis in connection with CP Kelco’s ammonia storage. CP Kelco chose to upgrade the safety installations based on NIRAS’ analysis and on CP Kelco’s own general safety requirements.
NIRAS was subsequently hired to upgrade the safety installations for CP Kelco’s ammonia storage at said factory.
The project consisted of establishing a new roof construction for the tank and an automatic sprinkler system which will intercept the ammonia fumes should a breakdown occur resulting in a leak of the ammonia.
Furthermore the process systems for the ammonia storage have been upgraded so that all safety functions are now doubled.
