As part of a Danish Technology demonstration project, soil mixing with ZVI-Clay has been tested. The soil is mixed in-situ with bentonite and zero-valent iron in order to contain and abiotically degrade the contaminants.
The project has included a literature study, laboratory treatability testing, detailed design, and full-scale remediation of a 25 m2 hotspot area with PCE DNAPL. The laboratory work has been performed in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Environment, and Colorado State University.
The results have shown a mass removal of >99%, and concentrations in the soil after remediation were below the Danish quality criterias for soil.
