Based on initial laboratory feasibility tests, detailed design of enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) in a fractured limestone aquifer in Copenhagen (Vesterbro) was developed.
Implementation of ERD was done by initially re-circulation of ground water through a dechlorinating bioreactor, followed by addition of substrate before re-injection. Following the active phase, the groundwater monitoring showed a near full dechlorination of the target compounds.
Design of a passive substrate re-injection system for the subsequent passive phase was conducted. The results continue to show that the reductive dechlorination is still active more than 4 years after the initial addition of carbon substrate.
