Forest-based enterprise development and the private sector
Private sector development is vital for sustainable economic growth. Private forestry refers to a management regime where forestry operations are run as private initiatives or by enterprises on private land, communal land or state land. Private forestry by individuals and their families is commonly small-scale. We recognise the importance of small and medium scale local level private forestry to complement the other management regimes for sustainable resource use and poverty reduction.
Adequate knowledge and information is a prerequisite for local communities and farmers to capture full benefits from forestry. We believe that there are various options for efficient service delivery and that the selection of best service provider is situation specific. Therefore, we recognise the role for the private sector and NGOs e.g. in providing advisory services through outsourcing arrangements and at the same time SME development around service delivery.
The forest sector is much more that merely production in the beginning of the value chain. Enterprise development for wood and NTFPs processing provides excellent opportunities for economic growth. A growing wood processing industry will increase the demand for forest products and therefore, also provides incentives for sustainable forest management.
