Environment

The environmental path to the future

Nature plays an important role in the wellbeing of humans. It allows room for reflection, recreation and experience. At the same time, nature is vulnerable to the impact of human activities, including farming and industry. The balance between the environment and nature on the one hand and the need for development and growth on the other is a major challenge for most organisations and companies.

NIRAS’ approach recognizes that local people, local livelihoods and ecosystems with the species and functions they contain, must all be taken into consideration for a successful management of natural resources. We emphasize socially acceptable solutions and search for sustainable alternatives for income generation for the poor. These are a prerequisite for resolving confrontations between conservation efforts and sustainable use of natural resources and thus human needs.

We follow actively the developments of Multilateral Environmental Agreements like the UNFCCC, CBD and UNCCD. NIRAS has insight in tools and policies such as the integrated management approach, cross-boarder cooperation for environmental planning, The Kyoto Protocol, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) for carbon and emissions trading schemes, Joint Implementation (JI) and national REDD Readiness Plans.
