Siloetten in Løgten, 15 km from the centre of Aarhus (DK), used to be a grain silo but it has been totally transformed. It is now a 36-metre high block of 21 flats, all with a view across Aarhus bay, and it has been proclaimed the winner of the international Residential of the Year WAN AWARDS 2010.
There is good reason to be proud of this achievement. Siloetten, with its incredibly elegant architecture, outclassed high-class projects from metropolises such as New York, Shanghai and Hamburg and from all over the world.
As the engineer, we at NIRAS also have a right to be proud. We designed the structures as well as the sewers and routing of installations to the converted silo. Siloetten was created by architects C.F. Møller and was a sure winner among the many nominated projects. The jury fell, in particular, for the sophisticated, spacious finish and the innovative, sustainable reuse of the silo.
Siloetten does not only house apartments. A town square complete with shops has been constructed next to the former silo, breathing new life into the Løgten/Skødstrup area.
Since Siloetten was inaugurated in 2010 it has been the object of much admiration both in Denmark and abroad. The building won the Municipality of Aarhus' Architecture Award in 2010.
