Security and business continuity is critical for airport schemes

The nature of airport terminal buildings require that fire strategies utilise circulation routes and maximise retail while maintaining utmost security.

Value added to airport projects includes:

  • Business continuity
  • Open plan spaces
  • Combined fire and security team mean that the conflicting needs of egress and tight security can met and solutions optimised.

The key to airport planning is to provide fire evacuation holding zones where security screened passengers and non security screened passengers can be held. This allows a swift return to business following a small fire event.

Members of the NIRAS Safety team have worked on:

Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA)
With piers over a kilometre end to end and an annual capacity of approximately 20 Million Passengers, ADIA presented a formidable fire engineering challenge (image top right).

Brisbane International Airport & Brisbane Domestic Terminal
Brisbane airport undertook a refurbishment scheme in 2008 which NIRAS staff members oversaw. The particular challenge here was keeping the unaffected areas of the airport up and running whilst the works were underway.
